Abortion is the knowing destruction of the life of an unborn child. But this is only part of the story as abortion hurts the women involved. While some people believes abortions are not harmful to the mothers, others see that abortion affects women physically and emotionally.
The immediate complications of abortion can include hemorrhage, cervical injury, convulsions, infection and shock. Those immediate complications can lead to the risk of damage to a woman’s reproductive organs and her future ability to have children.
Studies have also found a statistically significant association between abortion and breast cancer and seriously, abortions can lead to deaths.
Besides, emotional and psychological effects of abortions are also very common and can range from mild regret to more serious complications like depression.
David’s findings from the 30-year longitudinal study suggest
that women who have abortions are at risk of severe mental health problems.
Another study also shows that those who undergo abortion face nearly double the
risk of mental health difficulties compared with others.

Hey lucy.
ReplyDeleteI really like the amount of research you have done in this blog. it backs up your points extremly well.
I myself am pro abortion. in this blog you talk alot about the affect abortions have on mothers both physically and mentally. it would be good to see some figures on this. although i do not disagree that abortions do have some repercussions, in my eyes abortions are not only saving a wasted life for the mother, but also a potential hard life for the child if it was to be born. an article by colorlines.com (link below) talks about how in 2008, 48% of abortions were had by those classed as 'poor'. Its hard to know the sort of life these children, and mothers would have had if the mother did not terminate the pregnancy.

I'm not going to get into any discussion about abortion. But here is an interesting article about abortion and the link between crime rates.

I had to read the book as part of an economics class.
Hey Lucy, I am also impressed with your strong points For your argument and you pose a difficult stance for me to take as someone who doesn't disagree with abortions. There are a multitude of opinions and factors that I could debate that have been debated before to support pro abortion but I will only highlight one, which you have used here to support your claim and that is the emotional facts.
ReplyDeleteWhile I don't deny that having an abortion can lead to some regret and emotional backlash such as depression, this is an extremely temperamental facet because I would argue there are some cases where abortion might be necessary to preserve the mental health of a woman, or girl. Such as in cases of rape and in such case I do not agree that a woman should carry an unwanted child to full term and then adopt it out because the mental trauma as well as physical could potentially outweigh any temporary feelings of regret. A lifetime of depression knowing you mothered a child you didn't want and no longer have is not worth the longer lasting mental pain.
Also in Codee's case where a girl faces losing the prospect of a successful future would be a point I support, because while you argue a life is taken away before it was born, I would argue a life abruptly ended before it had a chance to grow.
